Nigeria’s dwindling fortunes in the sprints were further underlined on Monday as it could only pick a silver medal in the 100 metres at the All Africa Games (AAG) in Congo.

In the finals of the event’s men and women competition at the new National Sports Complex in Kintele in Brazzaville, Nigeria won the men’s silver medal through Ogho-Oghene Egwero.

He ran in at 10.17 seconds, behind Cote d’Ivoire’s Ben Metie who won the gold medal with a time of 10.04.

Egwero had run the best time of the semi-finals on Sunday, 10.06, to win his heat, while Metie had also won his heat with 10.12.

The other Nigerians in the final, Nicholas Imhoaperamhe and Seye Ogunlewe, finished outside the medals range.

In the women’s race, which took place moments just before the men’s version, Cecilia Francis could not come up with a medal as Marie-Josee Talou won with a time of 11.02.
