Brazilian midfielder Willian struck a minute from time to hand Premier League leaders Chelsea a dramatic 1-0 win over Everton while Nigerian striker Brown Ideye scored as West Brom claimed a 2-0 win at home to Swansea City on Wednesday.

With the tie poised for a goalless draw, a result that would have seen second placed Manchester City close the gap at the top, Willian won the match for the Blues after lashing in off a punched clearance from Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard.

The result saw Chelsea maintain a seven-point lead over Man. City, that eased to a 4-1 demolition of Stoke City at the Britannia with James Milner and Samir Nasri scoring either side of a Sergio Agüero brace for the champions while Peter Crouch scored Stoke’s lone goal.

The win at the Britannia ensured Man. City ended a run of five matches without a win while also becoming the ninth club in Premier League history to win 1,000 points.

Elsewhere in the Premier League on Wednesday, Chris Smalling came off the bench to score twice as Manchester United beat Burnley 3-1 to return to third spot on the standings with 47 points while Southampton managed to return to fourth place at Arsenal’s expense following a goalless draw with West Ham United.

Ideye and Saido Berahino scored in the second half to give West Brom a 2-0 win over Swansea while Crystal Palace got a 1-1 draw at home to manager Alan Pardew’s former club Newcastle United.
