The United Nations on Friday expressed concerns over renewed Boko Haram attacks in Borno, one of the most affected states in the northeastern part of Nigeria.

The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for West Africa, UNOWA, Mr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, while condemning the renewed waves of attacks in the state by the sect that has killed thousands of residents in villages and towns, destroyed properties and rendered many others desolate over the years, said the UN was particularly worried about women and children as victims of the attacks.

The latest attack occurred on Thursday in Gumsuri, a village in Borno where 32 were killed and scores abducted by the terrorists.
Gumsuri is close to Chibok where over 200 female students were abducted months ago with the government yet to find the girls.

A statement by Mr. Oluseyi Soremekun, National Information Officer, UN Information Centre, said Chambas particularly condemned reported large abductions of women and children.

Chambas, who is also the high-level representative of the secretary-general to Nigeria, noted that the renewed waves of attacks were being perpetrated against innocent civilians.

The special representative called on the Nigerian authorities to do everything possible to curb the continuous attacks taking place in the North-East.

He also called on the authorities to bring the perpetrators of the attacks to justice.

Chambas expressed the sympathy of the UN to the families of the victims, the people and the Government of Nigeria.
