A pulsating Capital One Cup third round encounter at Anfield saw Liverpool come out 14-13 penalty shoot-out winners over Kenneth Omeruo’s Middlesbrough following a 2-2 draw after 120 minutes of football.

It is the first time in the competition’s history that any club has scored at least 10 penalties, while Liverpool became only the second side from England’s top four league divisions to score 14 times in a penalty shoot-out after Dagenham & Redbridge.

17-year old Jordan Rossiter put Liverpool ahead after 10 minutes through a first-time strike from long range after debutant Boro goalkeeper Jamal Blackman had come some way out to deny Rickie Lambert.

The Reds went on to dominate play but failed to find a second, with Boro coming close minutes before half-time through Tomlin who had a long range effort kept out by goalkeeper Simon Mignolet as scores remained in Liverpool’s favour going into the break.

Boro’s breakthrough came just after the hour mark though, with Adam Reach beating his marker to head home a low cross from Grant Leadbitter while Clayton came close to giving the visitors a shock lead only to see his strike come off the Liverpool woodwork as the match went to extra time.

And following a goalless first period, Jose Enrique and Raheem Sterling was denied seconds apart by Blackman as Liverpool began the second period of extra time looking the more likely to score.

And score the Reds did moments later through substitute Suso who latched on to a loose ball to drill in an effort through a mass of bodies, with the Spanish youngster seeing another effort parried away by Blackman two minutes to full time.

Blackman’s save ushered a dramatic end to extra time as Kolo Toure fouled substitute Patrick Bamford in the area at the death, with the on-loan Chelsea striker sending Mignolet the wrong way to send the match to penalties.

Bamford would miss Boro’s first kick in the shoot-out, between Mario Balotelli and Lucas Leiva putting the Reds 2-0 up, but Boro were able to level at 4-4 through substitute Jelle Vossen after Sterling missed the fifth spotkick that could have won it earlier for the Reds.

Both sides scored the following nine penalty kicks each and after Suso scored a second time in the shoot-out, Albert Adomah shot wide as Middesbrough finally succumbed to allow Liverpool passage to the fourth round.
