The final and semi-final matches of the first and likely only pan-continental UEFA European Championship to take place in 2020 has been awarded to the Wembley Stadium in London.

The idea of a multi-national European Championship was touted by UEFA president Michel Platini to mark the 60th anniversary of UEFA, and would involve matches being played in various cities of different nations rather than in one nation as usual.

English Football Association’s bid using Wembley was unanimously chosen by UEFA to host the showpiece matches for Euro 2020 after Germany withdrew just before voting to decide the host cities took place.

Germany’s withdrawal is to allow the DFB to focus on bidding for Euro 2024, with English FA chairman Greg Dyke revealing both associations had met and agreed England would not bid for Euro 2024 hosting rights.

According to the 67-year old, “There is no agreement (between the English FA and Germany’s DFB to back DFB’s Euro 2024 bid) other than we will not bid for 2024, as we wouldn’t get it.”

Meanwhile other cities chosen host Euro 2020 matches are Munich (Germany), Rome (Italy), Baku (Azerbaijan) and St. Petersburg (Russia) in which three group stage matches each and one quarterfinal match each would be played.

Other cities to take part in hosting Euro 2020 matches are Glasgow (Scotland), Bilbao (Spain), Copenhagen (Denmark), Budapest (Hungary), Brussels (Belgium), Dublin (Republic of Ireland) and Amsterdam (Netherlands).

The other seven cities would each host three more group stage matches as well as one round of 16 match.
