Stoke City have caused a major stir after coming away from the Etihad Stadium with a 1-0 win over Manchester City in a Premier League match on Saturday.

The winning goal came just before the hour mark when Mame Biram Diouf ran the full length of the field with the ball and finished off a Stoke counterattack, off a cleared Manchester City cornerkick at the other end.

The goal, Diouf’s first Premier League goal in 1,341 days, gave Stoke its first ever Premier League win in the city of Manchester as well as its first ever Premier League goal at the Etihad Stadium.

Defeat meanwhile condemned Man. City to just a second game without scoring in 71 league matches at home.

On-loan Nigerian forward Victor Moses started for Stoke in an encounter Man. City dominated, with Samir Nasri’s first-time shot being saved by Stoke keeper Asmir Begovic early on.

The Bosnian stopper would deny Sergio Agüero around the half-hour mark but had the woodwork to thank just before half-time when Yaya Toure’s close range effort came off the crossbar as the half finished goalless.

The champions continued to dominate proceedings after the break and Ivorian midfielder Toure again came close with a long range effort which Begovic pushed out for a cornerkick.

It was from the resultant kick that Stoke cleared and Diouf made away with the ball, keeping his composure to slot the ball through Joe Hart’s legs in the Man. City goal and give Stoke an unlikely lead.

The home side pressed forward in search of at least an equaliser but Stoke held on to claim an historic win.

In other matches played so far, Nathan Dyer scored twice as Swansea City’s perfect start to the season continued with a 3-0 win over West Brom while Morgan Schneiderlin scored twice as well, as Southampton came away from London with a 3-1 win over West Ham United while Sunderland fell to a lone goal loss at home to newly promoted Queens Park Rangers.

Arguably the game of the afternoon came at St. James’ Park where on-loan Manchester United midfielder Wilfried Zaha scored an equaliser in the 95th minute for Crystal Palace in the 3-3 draw against Newcastle United.

Meanwhile in the early kick-off, Zaha’s parent club Manchester United played out a disappointing goalless draw at newly promoted Burnley to maintain a winless start to the league season for both sides.
