Scottish champions Celtic failed to make home advantage count in its second leg UEFA Champions League play-off while FC Porto and Zenit St. Petersburg were among the five clubs to book a place in the group stage of the lucrative competition.

Celtic went into the match at Parkhead with a slight advantage courtesy of a 1-1 draw from the first leg at Slovenian champions Maribor last Wednesday.

A goalless draw would have been enough for Celtic to go through on away goals and it looked so until Tavares scored for the visitors with 15 minutes to go. Celtic found no way back as Maribor claimed a 2-1 aggregate win.

Legia Warsaw would be satisfied that Celtic did not make the group stage, having been thrown out of the competition in the penultimate qualifying round for fielding a player deemed ineligible by UEFA.

The aggrieved Polish champions had beaten Celtic 6-1 on aggregate but relinquished a play-off spot due to not registering the ineligible player in the three matches he was to serve according to UEFA.

In other play-off results, FC Porto got a 2-0 win over Vincent Enyeama’s Lille to complete a 3-0 aggregate win while Hulk scored twice as Zenit got a 3-0 win over Standard Liege to go through 4-0 on aggregate.

The line up for the Champions League group stage will be completed on Wednesday night, with Besiktas heading to London with a goalless score from the first leg against Arsenal while Napoli visit Athletic Bilbao with aggregate score level at 1-1 from last Tuesday’s first leg.
