Abuja – The APC has urged INEC to ensure level playing ground to all political parties participating in June 21 governorship election in Ekiti.

Its National Chairman, Chief John Oyegun, made the call during the inauguration of the National Executive Committee of the party on Wednesday in Abuja.

Oyegun said that APC would not accept the outcome of the election in Ekiti unless the authorities provide convincing explanations to the series of questionable developments in the state.

He recalled that two weeks ago a detachment of anti-riot police fired teargas at a rally of APC supporters in Ado Ekiti, including the state governor Dr Kayode Fayemi.

“If this dangerous trend is not controlled, the consequences will be dire for democracy and our country,” the chairman said.

According to him, election rigging in the country in the past years have serious consequences for the government in power and the country as a whole.

He said the APC will not accept any result that does not flow from a transparent election.

“We are not asking for any favour. We only demand a free and fair election,” he said.

Oyegun, however, commended the security agencies in Ekiti for discharging their responsibilities effectively and urged them to be “always professional and thorough”.

Earlier, the outgoing Interim Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, described the party as a truly pan-Nigerian political party that had given hope to all Nigerians.

Akande explained that the party had showed to Nigerians that democracy would indeed survive and that the dividends of democracy would not continue to elude the people.

He said that the country’s diversity was a huge advantage which, when properly harnessed, could propel the country to greater heights.

“We do not seek power for the sake of power, but for the sake of our people,” he said.

Akande congratulated all members of the Interim Executive Committee for nurturing the party to its present level.

The Chairman, National Convention Committee of APC, Aliyu Wamakko, debunked the speculation that there were changes in the position of the newly- elected Executive Committee of APC.

Wamakko said, “nobody or position has been changed and nobody will change any particular position under my watch.”
