Gerardo Martino has announced he will be stepping down as manager of Barcelona by mutual consent, in a statement posted on the club’s website following the loss of the La Liga title to Aletico Madrid on Saturday night.

Martino, who joined Barcelona at the start of the season from Argentine club Newell’s Old Boys, thanked the club president, director of football, players, staff and fans for their support during his time at the club.

Under his guidance, Barcelona was beaten at the quarterfinal stage of the UEFA Champions League by Atletico, lost 2-1 to Real Madrid in the final of the Copa Del Rey before a 1-1 draw at home to Atletico in their final league match saw the Catalans finish second, three points behind Atletico.

Barcelona Football Director Andoni Zubizarreta thanked Martino for the job he’s done at the club in what was a complicated season and for keeping Barça competitive through the season.

With Martino gone, there is no indication from the club as to who they will appoint as a replacement although former midfielder Luis Enrique, who announced during the week he would step down as Celta Vigo manager at the end of the season, is a rumoured target.
